The woman who killed her parents-in-law in northeast Delhi by her boyfriend has admitted to the police that she had thought of eliminating them for months due to restrictions they had placed on her. However, her decision to sell a property valued at Rs 1.30 crore forced her to take action quickly.
Police stated that Monika Verma (aged 30) wanted to sell her property and use the money for settling down with Ashish, her 29-year-old boyfriend. But her parents-in-law — Radhey Shyam Verma and his wife Veena — finalised a deal on February 12 to sell a part of the property in Gokalpuri to buy a new house in Dwarka.
Monika was compelled by this decision to form a conspiracie with her boyfriend in order to get things done quickly.
Monika and Ashish met in a hotel to discuss a plan. Ashish set up SIM cards for them and gave them a few new numbers. Monika was even given a new SIM Card by Ashish.
“Two days before the murder, Ashish and Monika started talking on their secret phones. He called her on Sunday evening. He arrived with his associate just after dark. Monika checked that the house was empty before calling him in through the back gate. She had taken her mother-inlaw and her husband to the market. Her father-in-law was at his shop and returned after 8 pm,” DCP (Northeast) Joy Tirkey said.
Ashish and his friend went hiding on the terrace. Monika provided soft drinks and snacks for them, the officer stated.
“Sometime after 1:15 am, Ashish called Monika and told her he was coming downstairs and she should not come out of the room. They spoke on the phone for the entire time. At about 2:12 am, Ashish called her to inform he was leaving and the job (murders) had been done,” he said.
DCP Tirkey said Monika’s husband Ravi Rattan, 38, knew about Monika’s extra-marital affair and this had built an atmosphere of stress in the family. Later, Ravi’s parents – Radhey Shyam Verma and his wife Veena – also came to know about it and they would keep a watch on her, which made Monika feel “stifled”, Tirkey added.
Monika claimed that Ashish, a Ghaziabad resident and her in-laws, had placed many restrictions on her. In frustration, they began planning to murder Radhey Shyam Verma (72) and Veena (68) in December. However, the execution took place at Gokalpuri’s residence on Monday, police stated.
Ashish and his friend are being sought after. Ashish’s location has been traced to Uttarakhand, Tirkey said.
CCTV footage has shown that Ashish and his friend were wearing helmets when they committed the crime and then left on a motorcycle. it’s been confirmed that the person riding pillion was Ashish, he said.
Monika and Rattan were married in 2016. They have a six year-old son. However, after marriage, Monika left her job.
Ashish, her friend, contacted her via Facebook in August 2020 during the Covid lockdown. They soon became friends and met in February 2021 at a hotel. Police said that they continued to meet at hotels after that.
“Ravi found about his wife’s affair after reading messages on her WhatsApp account. He confiscated her smartphone and gave it to her as a feature phone. But Ashish and Monika continued to meet. Often, Ashish would take Monika to his house and introduced her to his family as his girlfriend,” DCP Tirkey said.
When Ashish’s mother came to know Monika was married, she objected to the relationship, he said.
Rattan was a Mustafabad guest teacher, but she later opened a Johripur clothing and cosmetic shop. Police said Monika graduated from Delhi University. She worked at a call center in Noida prior to marrying.
Verma was the vice principal at a Delhi government school, Karol Bagh.
The family lived in the house for 38 years.
Police claimed that Rs 4.5 million and some jewellery were missing from the home after the crime. Senior police officers said the iron gate that was located at the rear of house was likely the way the killers entered the home.
